"Dad, Did You Bring the Camera?"

Spring is finally here so I set out for one of Tulsa's wonderful places for photography.  The Tulsa Garden Center has plants indoors and outdoors. Today's Project64: Out of The Box photograph was taken in a greenhouse at the Garden Center. While I was taking photographs with both my Olympus and my cell phone, I overheard a young man who was watching me take pictures ask "Dad, did you bring the camera?"  I had to chuckle inwardly when I heard the father reply, "No, that would have been a great idea!!"  

This is a Bird of Paradise. There were two or three of these beautiful plants in full regalia in the greenhouse I visited.  For this particular plant, my mobile phone camera gave me the truest color. 

The sun was really bright outside when I had a chance to visit the Garden Center so I stayed with indoor photographs. I also went to the Orchid Show in the main building and I will be posting some photograhs from the show soon.

I'm a week late with the color, Indigo. It's been hectic lately. I found this when I went in the Shiloh National Park gift shop.

Angela's Week 6 ~ Apricot

I realize this is not the most photographic image, but as the saying goes, "Never judge a book by it's cover." This dog may look like an ole' yard dog lucky to find a home, but this is a special dog that has been loved by hundreds of children over the past 13 years. I would like to introduce you to "Happy," our school mascot. "Happy" came to our school 13 years ago as a stray dog, and has been with us ever since. If you ever come to visit our school, you would see "Happy" on the front steps greeting the children before they enter the building. Later in the day, when the bell rings for recess, you can find "Happy" on the playground hanging out with kids as they run and play. Then, at the end of the school day, you can see "Happy" standing with the children as they are in line to be picked up from school. Over the years "Happy" has made a big imprint on all of our hearts - children, teachers, parents, and even our state auditors.

For this week's color, I thought and thought on where I was going to find the color Apricot. Funny thing is, she was right under my nose the entire time!

Week 6: Apricot ~ Delores

"Hurry! I'm losing dark!"

Now that is something I never expected to hear myself say! Wanting to capture the most dark around my candle, I took this photo before sunrise this morning. Naturally my two dogs were eager to go in and out often while I was taking pictures. While standing at the back door waiting for one of our dogs to come inside I caught myself telling her "Hurry, I'm losing dark" because my lighting was going to change the closer to sunrise we got. I knew once the light started coming in through the windows I would not have the look I wanted. I had to chuckle when I realized what I had said. Usually we comment "I'm losing light" when we are outside taking photographs or working on something and we want every last second of precious light we can get. 

I had a lot of fun with my week 6 submission. This candle is called "Apricot Tea" and has a light apricot-y smell to it. (Don't you wish your computer had smell-i-vision? Emeril fans will recognize that phrase.) This was taken with my Olympus SP590UZ. My ISO was 125, Aperture ~ f/3.5, Shutter Speed ~ 1/20, metering was Pattern and focal length was 9.22mm. It was a toss up between the above photo and another photograph with a straight wick. I felt the curve in the wick was more appealing.

The candle appears a deeper shade of Apricot because there were no lights on in the room and I used a black backdrop behind the candle.

Want to see what was underneath the candle? Just for fun I took a photo with a light on behind me. If you look very closely you will see a piece of felt with zebra stripes {grin!} underneath the candle.

My ISO changed to 64 and my shutter speed changed to 1/15 for the photo taken from above the candle.

Angela's Week 5 ~ Gray

One of my favorite memories is when we were going down the TN river in a boat feeding the seagulls. My children started throwing out pieces of bread to about 3-4 seagulls watching them catch it in mid-air. Before we knew it, somewhere around 50-60 seagulls joined in and were chasing our boat down the river. What a sight! And of all times, I didn't have my camera with me!

Week 5: Gray ~ Delores

Whenever I visit a swinging bridge I always look for carvings on the wood. This week's submission for Project 64 was one of those finds.

Someone was declaring their love for Pam until someone else came along and decided to declare their love for Spam!

There are a few rules at this swinging bridge:

No more than five people on bridge at a time

Swinging not allowed

Persons engaged in top rope climbing,

rappelling or bouldering must secure a permit

Helmets are required

Next time you walk out on a swinging bridge, go out to the center of the bridge overlooking water, stand in the center of the bridge width-wise also. With camera in hand turn quickly to get a photo of something on the water. It will give you pause for thought. My sister and I both had this happen to us (we were not on the swinging bridge at the same time).  You will have to try this for yourself to know what I mean as it is hard to describe. If you have acrophobia (fear of heights) and/or are prone to vertigo, please do not try this!

Week 4: Robin's Egg Blue ~ Delores

Robin's Egg Blue is such a pretty color! For my submission to Project 64: Out of the Box, I have chosen the Blue Whale, a Route 66 Tourist attraction in Catoosa, Oklahoma.

Hugh Davis, former Director of the Tulsa Zoo, built the Blue Whale as an anniversary gift for his wife, Zelta, in 1972. Thanks to Hampton Hotel's Save-A-Landmark program for repainting the Blue Whale and cleaning the grounds! (Right click on the Hampton Hotel name for more information about Save-A-Landmark, but be sure and come back to our blog!)

I had so much fun taking photographs at the Blue Whale, I decided to make them into a movie. The music is Electric Blue (Sorry, I could not resist!) by Mannheim Steamroller. Click on the arrow to start the video. Double click on the arrow to make the video full screen size. If you go to full screen and the movie does not start, press the space bar on your keyboard one time and the movie will start. Then when you are through watching, press esc (upper left key on your keyboard).

Week 3: Chestnut ~ Delores

For this week's Project 64: Out of the Box I "dusted" off a photo I took in October. When I was visiting family, my sister and I went to First United Methodist Church in Corinth, Mississippi while looking for photographs depicting architectural "letters." The hardware for the door handles on one of the doors of Fillmore Street Chapel look like the Letter "H." My sister has seen names spelled with architectural alphabets. {Forgive me if this is not the correct terminology for this style.}

Wanting to document the building itself, I stepped back to get a more broader view of the entrance. As you can tell from the aged brick in the photograph near the top, this building has a rich history. The sign out front says "Corinth's oldest church bldg: erected 1871 by Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the first church est. in Corinth.  1906-1976 served as Fillmore St. Pres. Ch. Now used as chapel by First United Methodist Church." The interior has been remodeled and this chapel is greatly sought after for weddings.

The First Crayon Out of the Box

Searching for a specific color each week is something new for me. I was looking all over for Yellow Green outside, but it was difficult since it is Winter. Imagine my delight when we visited a new restaurant in the town. When you first walk in the door you see a display of pots with water trickling down from each pot. First crayon out of the box ~ found!!

It is not every day you are able to capture your first crayon out of the box and a restaurant on their first day of business.  Here is their marque celebrating the day:

Project 64: Out of the Box

We are participating in a wonderful project called Project 64: Out of the Box.

Our adventure began this month (January, 2011). For 64 weeks we will be challenged to photograph something depicting the color of the week.  We are excited about this project which was created by six lovely ladies. You can learn more about them and about Project 64: Out of the Box by visiting their blog: project64colors.blogspot.com. You may also right click on the photo and choose "Open Link in New Window."
